Makabayan senatorial bet and Nacionalista Party guest candidate Satur Ocampo today expressed outrage that the army officers responsible for arresting and violating the rights of 43 health workers known as the Morong 43 will be awarded bronze cross medals.
Ocampo said that that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) was deliberately and most maliciously rubbing salt into the wounds of the Morong 43, their families and supporters with the act. "It is clear that the AFP wants to project impunity and defiance against the widespread condemnation it is facing due to its continued detention of the Morong 43.
"She cannot stay silent," Makabayan-Senatorial candidate Liza Maza on Thursday slammed Malacanang's declaration that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo chose to distance herself from the Morong 43 case.
"As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Philippines, President Arroyo has responsibility over the actions of her men, especially their mistakes. She cannot stay in the sidelines and watch her men commit atrocities against innocent civilians because that would be a violation of her constitutional duty as the chief protector of human rights," Maza said.
In a press conference today, Makabayan-Nacionalista senatorial candidate Liza Maza of Gabriela expressed support to Ofel Beltran-Balleta, mother of Jane Balleta, for courageously pursuing justice for her daughter who was among the women members of the Morong 43 who experienced “sexualized torture” while illegally detained in Camp Capinpin.
“Sexual abuse as a form of torture is a serious allegation that warrants immediate and impartial investigation. I find it extremely disturbing to think of what the victims, most especially the women, have to go through day by day in the presence of their torturers," Maza said.
