Makabayan senatorial bet and Nacionalista Party guest candidate Satur Ocampo today called on the Supreme Court to reverse its March 17 ruling allowing Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to appoint a new chief justice, saying it was being abused by the President.
"Given the a rash of illegal and unconstitutional midnight appointments that followed the SC decision, the High Court should immediately reverse its decision. It is not enough for the Court to say that their March 17 decision does not justify Macapagal-Arroyo's recent appointments to various positions. Given this administration's penchant to push the limits of the law, the Court should not allow any opening for abuse," said Ocampo.
"The SC's decision to allow Arroyo to appoint a new chief justice has given Malacanang an excuse to abuse its authority further and make illegal appointments left and right. It is patently obvious that the Malacanang will exploit the March 17 decision," Ocampo said. He said that the SC should also declare all midnight appointments of Mrs. Arroyo null and void.#
